Stage A Party for Two
The history of Valentine's Day is a little unclear. Some say it was celebrated to honor two Christian martyrs, including St. Valentine, a priest jailed for allegedly marrying young Roman soldiers to their loves in secret. Others say it was introduced to distract from the pagan holiday, Lupercalia.
♥ Create a Romance Room!
- To give the party room a feeling of romantic intimacy, hang up sheets of pink or red crepe paper all over the walls, windows and doorways until it's fully enclosed.
- For a sultan's tent look, hang crepe paper streamers swagged from the center of the ceiling to the walls. Add balloons in the middle.
- Set up a small table in the center of the room, large enough to hold just the two or you, or all your guests. Cover the table with a white lace tablecloth.
- For intimacy, use a low coffee table and have your guests sit on the floor.
- Cut out hearts in all different sizes from pink, red, violet and white construction paper. Tape them to the walls, sprinkle them over the table, and hang them from the ceiling with pink yarn attached.
- Play romantic music in the background, to add to the atmosphere. Try something by Andrea Bocelli, Kenny G, Celine Dion or Frank Sinatra.
- Light candles around the room, and set the table with your best dishes and champagne glasses. Place a rose at each table setting.
♥ Dress up for the Occasion
- Wear a fantasy gown as if you're going to the ball, and have him wear a tuxedo.
- Enjoy your romantic dinner wearing your sexy lingerie or underwear.
- If it's just the two of you, why wear anything?
♥ Offer foods from the aphrodisiac gods
- Make dinner first class, with steak, lobster, oysters and all the trimmings.
- For a fun meal, serve anything pink - and tint the rest. Try salmon with pink tinted rice, beets and pink tinted butter on bread.
- Make a pretty and pink dessert - serve strawberry ice cream over ladyfingers with chocolate sauce and a cherry on top. Save the whip cream for later....(wink!)
- Start with pink champagne or strawberry daiquiris, with a strawberry in the flute glass. End with a sip of brandy or some gourmet coffee.
- Have a friend or your kids act as waiters and let them serve the meal to you.
Play the Newlywed Game! Find out how much you really know about each other by asking personal questions you both answer. Try these to start:
- What's his/her idea of a perfect vacation?
- What's his/her secret wish?
- What's his/her plan after retirement?
- What's his/her most romantic memory?
Keep the love going with Love Coupons! Make Love Coupons from pink construction paper, and write an offer on each one. Tie together with ribbon and give them out after dinner. You might try some of the following:
- Good for 1 kiss in public.
- Good for a 10-minute foot massage.
- Good for a shampoo and rinse.
- Good for 1 dinner of your choice.
Write your own poetic valentines!
- Hand out heart-shaped paper and pens and have everyone write a love poem to his or her loved one. To get them going, start with "Roses are red . . ."
